Toyota
Toyota is one of the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers, with worldwide at 9.5 million vehicles in 2007.
Toyota first began importing vehicles to the UK market in 1965 with the Toyota Corona. The following year it introduced a model which was to become the world’s best selling car - the Toyota Corolla.
A key element in Toyota’s success is its commitment to designing, engineering and building cars in the world regions where they are sold. In Europe, this resulted in a car plant at Derby, and an engine factory in North Wales.
Derby began producing cars in 1992 with the Toyota Carina, followed a few years later by the Toyota Corolla. As the cars developed through their lifecycles this has led to the Toyota Avensis and Toyota Auris models which are produced today. Further manufacturing plants in Europe have provided our market with the popular Toyota Yaris, Toyota Aygo and Toyota Verso.
Toyota’s strong 4x4 heritage started in 1950 with the launch of the Toyota Land Cruiser and this model was joined in 1994 by the Toyota RAV4.
Toyota’s participation in motorsport has undoubtedly aided the development of its sports car range, culminating with the current participation in Formula One. Whilst not currently offering a sports coupe in its line up, the popular affordable two seater Toyota MR2, previous world rally championship Toyota Celica and high performance Toyota Supra are now favourites among vehicle tuners.
Toyota has been a pioneer and leader in hybrid technology. The Toyota Prius became the world’s most successful hybrid car with over a million sold since the launch of the first generation model in Japan in 1997. Future low emission models such as the innovative Toyota iQ and Toyota Urban Cruiser will keep Toyota at the forefront of environmental leadership.
