Fiat
Fiat was founded on 11 July 1899 at the Palazzo Bricherasio, Turin. Giovanni Agnelli immediately stood out among the investors for his determination and vision and in 1902 he was made managing director of the company.
Fiat’s first factory was opened in 1900 in Corso Dante and produced 24 cars there, including the Fiat 31/2 HP which at that time, was not fitted with a reverse gear.
In 1916 construction of the famous Lingotto factory in Turin began. The plant – the largest of its kind in Europe – occupied five floors and had a futuristic test track on its roof. It became the emblem of the Italian motor industry and was completed in 1922.
The nearby Mirafiori factory was completed in 1939 and in 1953 the first Fiat diesel-engined car was revealed – the 1400 diesel.
In 1978 the road towards production automation and innovation opened up with the introduction of Robogate, a flexible robotized system for assembling bodywork.
Today the Fiat Group is made up of Fiat, Fiat Professional, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and the newly re-introduced Abarth performance brand, which is being distributed from a number of selected sales outlets.
In the UK, the Fiat Group employs around 4,500 people in a number of factories, training centres and head offices, which have contributed, for more than 100 years, to making the Fiat Group a significant force in this country.
Fiat Group Automobiles UK Limited distributes the cars of Fiat: (Fiat Panda, Fiat 500, Fiat Grande Punto, Fiat Bravo, Fiat Sedici, Fiat Multipla, Fiat Fiorino Qubo, Fiat Doblo); Fiat Professional: (Fiat Grande Punto Van, Fiat Fiorino, Fiat Doblo Cargo Scudo, Fiat Ducato), with the addition of Abarth: (Grande Punto Abarth with 500 Abarth following in 2009).
The UK Fiat dealer network is currently 160-strong.
