Chevrolet
While Chevrolet as a brand has had a presence in Europe from its very inception – the company’s co-founder, Louis Chevrolet, was Swiss – it is only since 2005 that America’s everyday legend has been marketed in mainland Europe with vigour.
The first Chevrolet models – Matiz, Kalos, Lacetti and Tacuma – were introduced to the UK in 2005, since when over 40,000 Chevrolet cars have been sold here. The range was expanded in 2007 with the introduction of the Captiva SUV, which offers incredible value for money along with a much coveted seven-seat option, while in 2008 the Epica and Aveo join the line-up to further increase the brand’s market penetration.
Between 2008 and 2012, at least 10 new Chevrolet models will be introduced, with massive growth projected in Central and Eastern Europe and Russia, as well as more traditional markets such as Western Europe and the UK. Chevrolet’s new models include a roadgoing version of the Camaro concept car, which caused a huge stir when it made its debut at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show.
What’s more, Chevrolet’s commitment to becoming a truly global brand is set to gain further momentum in 2008, with production of Aveo five and three-door models starting at a new facility in Warsaw, Poland, in the summer of 2008 and a further new manufacturing plant due to open in St Petersburg, Russia, before the end of the year. Chevrolet also has joint venture manufacturing operations in Togliatti, Russia, and Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Chevrolet’s European headquarters are based in Zurich, Switzerland, while the UK head office is situated in Luton, Bedfordshire, where the brand forms part of GM UK, alongside Vauxhall, Saab, Cadillac, Corvette and HUMMER.
