Jeep Cherokee

Jeep Cherokee »

Average. Jeep's new Cherokee looks great and is awesome off road. It's just a shame it's not as good on it.

Chevrolet Epica

Chevrolet Epica »

Average. It might not be a revelation to drive, but if big, spacious and cheap is high priority, the Epica offers just that.

Renault Koleos

Renault Koleos »

Recommended. The SUV tag may lead you to expect a bit of sport with your utility, but this is more of a UV, and all the better for it. The Koleos concentrates instead on being a comfortable family car, with the added benefit of four-wheel drive.

Skoda Superb

Skoda Superb »

Recommended. The latest version of the Superb lives up to its name. It's big, stylish and comfortable but, most importantly, it's a bargain.

Seat Ibiza

Seat Ibiza »

Average. High marks for style and space in the all-new Ibiza, but it's a shame that the drive doesn't quite live up to the promise of those sleek and sporty looks.

Chevrolet Corvette C6

Chevrolet Corvette C6 »

Recommended. The latest Corvette C6 is raucous, rapid and relatively cheap to buy. It's still flawed, but its powertrain is much improved making it more exhilarating to drive. You'd have to really want one to forgive the sky-high running costs, but the noise from that V8 alone is almost worth it.

Vauxhall Agila

Vauxhall Agila »

Average. A massive improvement on the previous generation, but there are still too many minor niggles. Nowhere near the quality of the rest of the Vauxhall range.

Mercedes CLC

Mercedes CLC »

Average. The newest addition to the Mercedes Coupe family isn't quite the revelation we'd hoped for. But it is a stylish and relatively inexpensive entry-point into Mercedes Benz ownership

Honda Accord

Honda Accord »

Recommended. The new Accord is more driver focussed than ever, and it finally feels like a premium product. It's a bit pricey, but we reckon its worth every penny.

Citroen Berlingo Multispace

Citroen Berlingo Multispace »

Average. The new Berlingo is a good value, spacious and practical alternative to an MPV. The only thing that lets it down is it's just not that cool.

Subaru Forester

Subaru Forester »

Average. The quirky old Forester was a bit of a cult classic - especially the raucous 2.5-litre turbo version - but as Subaru pushes hard to be recognised as a more mainstream global brand, this new model's gone all sensible.

Chevrolet Aveo

Chevrolet Aveo »

Not recommended. Looks can deceive and, despite the seemingly affordable price tag, you only get what you pay for. Unfortunately, this really is nothing more than a budget motor.

Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen Tiguan »

Recommended. Subtle, but stylish, the Tiguan offers quality and refinement in a competitive package... and it's not bad off-road either.

Hyundai i10

Hyundai i10 »

Recommended. A decent city car that costs less than £7000 would be attractive in its own right. But, when you see how much the i10 gives you for how little money, it's an almost unbeatable combination.

Subaru Impreza

Subaru Impreza »

Average. The Impreza story isn't just about the WRX STi anymore. Subaru wants a slice of the small family car market too, but with poor economy, high CO2 emissions and a diesel variant still a fair way off, it doesn't quite cut it with the competition.

Ford Kuga

Ford Kuga »

Recommended. The Kuga is not a revolutionary product like the S-Max, but it is certainly one of the best small off-roaders you can buy.

Jaguar XF

Jaguar XF »

Recommended. Handsome, modern styling and a particularly striking interior make this a different kind of Jaguar. Its engines aren't the most powerful, environmental credentials should be stronger, but the XF is a real contender in this class.

Mitsubishi Lancer

Mitsubishi Lancer »

Average. The Lancer benefits from the similar sporty looks to its monstrous Evo sister, so it's a shame the drive doesn't live up to the style

Daihatsu Materia

Daihatsu Materia »

Not recommended. The Japanese may love it, but on English soil it looks out of place and out of date. Don't get us started on the price either.

Vauxhall VXR8

Vauxhall VXR8 »

Recommended. More house-trained than the feral Monaro that it replaces, but 411 bhp is still quite enough for mischief-making.

Citroen C5

Citroen C5 »

Recommended. It's French, but it thinks it's German and doesn't have the price tag. The new C5 might be a bit confused about its roots, but one thing is certain; it's excellent.

Mazda 6

Mazda 6 »

Recommended. The sharp-looking Mazda 6 is a cracking family car. It's not as spacious as a Ford Mondeo, but it's good to drive, well built and refined.

Chrysler Grand Voyager

Chrysler Grand Voyager »

Recommended. If you need space for a big family, versatility and the possibility of entertainment options such as roof-mounted DVD screens, this Chrysler is worth serious consideration.

Audi A4

Audi A4 »

Recommended. The A4 has grown up into one of the biggest and most spacious cars in its class. It has all the understated good looks and excellent build quality you'd expect. It's just a shame the drive doesn't quite match the looks.

Volvo V70

Volvo V70 »

Recommended. Comfortable, roomy and stylish, and now it handles well too. Volvo reminds us why the V70 is one of the best family cars around.

Cadillac CTS

Cadillac CTS »

Average. This could just be the best car ever to come out of America, and it's packed wth equipment and technology, but it isn't good enough to tempt buyers away from the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi.

Skoda Fabia

Skoda Fabia »

Recommended. The new longer, taller Fabia proves once and for all that bigger does mean better.

Proton Satria Neo

Proton Satria Neo »

Not recommended. Proton may have enlisted the help of Lotus with this car, but it's rather more pricey and tiresome than cheap and cheerful.

Mercedes McLaren SLR

Mercedes McLaren SLR »

Average. One of the fastest and most exclusive cars on the planet, the SLR offers astonishing performance, but suffers from awkward design, uninvolving handling and a ludicrous pricetag.

Cadillac Escalade

Cadillac Escalade »

Avoid. Vast American SUV that offers plenty of R n' B bling, but which feels woefully off-the-pace compared to European rivals when it comes to the business of driving.

Fiat 500

Fiat 500 »

Highly recommended. One of the most interesting, desirable, charming, best value, fun city cars on the market. It's not the most dynamic to drive, but the forthcoming Abarth version could resolve that. Fiat's got the basics of its modern Cinquecento absolutely right - it earns a rare five stars.

Maserati Gran Turismo

Maserati Gran Turismo »

Recommended. Glamorous, elegant, fast, sophisticated and rare, the Gran Turismo is everything an Italian super coupe should be - and without the rough edges. Heavy performance-and-economy denting weight and an odd driving position are the only drawbacks.

Renault Twingo

Renault Twingo »

Average. You'd have to like the looks an awful lot to put up with the poor ride and disappointing interior.

Renault Laguna

Renault Laguna »

Average. The new Laguna is better built and sharper to drive than the model it replaces. However, a jiggly ride and modest rear-seat space count against it.

Audi A5

Audi A5 »

Recommended. This is a refined big coupe with some sparkling engines, so it's a shame that the drive doesn't quite live up to the promise of its looks.

Mazda CX-7

Mazda CX-7 »

Recommended. A stylish return to the SUV market for Mazda - though without a diesel option it's hard to see it as a long-term commitment.

Jeep Compass

Jeep Compass »

Not Recommended. Not as good as it looks, and it doesn't look that good. Exactly the opposite of everything a Jeep should be.

Jeep Patriot

Jeep Patriot »

Average. Jeep's most impressive model for a while, although it's not without flaws. Genuine off-road ability, adequate on-road finesse and rugged looks will appeal - but not as much as the Patriot's budget price tag.

Peugeot 4007

Peugeot 4007 »

Average. The third and most disappointing product of the Mitsubishi/PSA collaboration, let down by its clumsy front-end and lack of trim options. It is also rather expensive.

Citroen C-Crosser

Citroen C-Crosser »

Recommended. An impressive debut SUV for Citroen - just a shame it offers little of the innovation that the French brand was once renowned for.

Mazda 2

Mazda 2 »

Recommended. Stylish, space efficient, low-weight supermini that makes sense.

smart fortwo

smart fortwo »

Recommended. A greenish supermini offering bags of driving fun with a well appointed interior.

Peugeot 308

Peugeot 308 »

Recommended. The 308 represents a return to form for Peugeot - it's amongst the top three family hatches going.

Dodge Avenger

Dodge Avenger »

Average. Bold and brash but not nearly as capable as more mainstream rivals like the Ford Mondeo - and not much cheaper either. It is interesting to behold, though, and will appeal to some on aesthetics alone.

BMW X5

BMW X5 »

Recommended. BMW's latest X5 is still the definitive on-roading off-roader and - Porsche Cayenne aside - remains the most fun SUV to drive.

Hyundai i30

Hyundai i30 »

Recommended. It's good value, particularly well-equipped, roomy, decidedly more contemporary than most previous Hyundais and comes with a five year unlimited mileage warranty as standard. Biggest suprise of all - it's also pretty good to drive.

Fiat Bravo

Fiat Bravo »

Recommended. Not the best in the class, but not the most expensive either, and the 150 T-Jet offers a tempting combination of style, performance and equipment.

Mercedes C Class

Mercedes C Class »

Recommended. Sticks with the scaled-down S-Class looks and space, but now with better finish, superb handling and decent steering feel

Dodge Nitro

Dodge Nitro »

Not recommended. Unless you aspire to drive a Hummer or have fallen in love with the styling, in which case you need to get a Nitro now. Otherwise it falls short of European and Japanese rivals in almost every way.

Chrysler Sebring

Chrysler Sebring »

Not recommended. Falls well short of its European rivals for driving dynamics and despite generous equipment levels it's overpriced. The less expensive Ford Mondeo is a better buy.
