Fiat 500 commands up to 10% premium over list price

Demand for the eye-catching new Fiat 500 is such that buyers are prepared to pay a substantial premium for the first models reaching the used car market

Customers eager to get their hands on Fiat's new A-segment offering are willing to pay up to £800 more for a second-hand example of the higher specification Lounge model, rather than join the long waiting list for a new car from the factory.

This significant price premium for the used model is due to the imbalance of supply and demand.

Volumes of the Fiat 500 are insufficient to satisfy the high level of demand in the new car market. Consequently a customer buying a new 500 has to wait a significant period of time before taking delivery of their car. Some buyers are, therefore, looking to the used car market as a way of shortcutting the process, even if it means paying a higher price for the privilege. And £800 is a considerable sum, given that list prices for the range start at just £8,000.

The appeal of the 500 should ensure that this situation persists. Its stylish looks, sensible pricing and fun-to-drive nature have attracted a positive reaction from the media and car buyers alike, suggesting that second-hand examples will continue to command a premium for some time.
