Compact MPVs - Plentiful supply of popular models now at sensible prices

Residual values take a knock as high numbers of used compact MPVs enter the used car market

Of all vehicle segments, the compact MPV sector saw the biggest explosion in new car registrations between 2000 and 2007. This surge in sales, which saw registrations increase by 56,800 during this period, has inevitably had a knock-on effect on residual values in the used car market. As second-hand examples are now plentiful, buyers have a wide range of vehicles to choose from, at sensible prices.

The ongoing success of compact MPVs has been driven by good interior packaging, versatility and affordability - all of which are key to attracting the family audience.

The compact MPV sector took just under 8 per cent of total new car sales in 2007, the lowest figure since reaching a record high of 8.7 per cent in 2004.

Now healthy levels of supply of used compact MPVs have started to affect values. These vehicles have passed their residual value peak, following the wave of three-year-old cars entering the market in the wake of the highest registration years. Examples offered for retail sale today that pre-date 2004, however, will still find a strong following because of limited choice.
