Older cars

With consumers looking for new ways to reduce their motoring costs, it is no surprise that small, economical used cars of all ages are in favour right now

There are various examples of superminis and lower-medium cars over eight years of age that are currently selling in under an hour on eBay when priced sensibly and displayed in the most effective way.

Despite the worsening economic climate, used prices are remaining relatively stable, and even old models like the Citroen ZX hatchback, with its conventional suspension and resistance to rust, will often sell for a good price, thanks to a reputation for excellent fuel economy on diesel models.

There is no doubt that prices for younger cars are in the doldrums, but cheap older cars are not feeling the pinch quite so hard.

Selling prices for relatively fuel-efficient older vehicles advertised online over the last few months have also remained impressive, with the Volkswagen Golf and Toyota Corolla being amongst the strongest.

Older hot hatches - Condition and practicality is key for potential buyers

Prices of older ‘hot’ hatchbacks are failing to keep up with the rest of the used car market, unless presented in prime condition

Cars in impeccable condition will find a stream of potential buyers ready to take the plunge. And those which also offer some degree of practicality stand an even greater chance of appealing to a wide audience.

The Volkswagen Golf GTi, particularly the late Mark 2 five-door, is a good example of a ‘classic’ hot hatch, and it continues to attract a steady flow of buyers, as long as it is presented in sound condition.

Key to the car’s attraction are its timeless design and its reputation for reliability, while three-point seat belts for rear passengers increase its appeal to families. The Golf also benefits from over 40mpg, which is ideal for those on a budget, looking for sensible fuel economy.

Other iconic models, such as the Peugeot 205 GTi and early examples of the Renaultsport Clio, also perform strongly if they have been well looked after.
