Residual values for the Hyundai i30

The first examples of the Hyundai i30 have reached the used car market, a year after the model was launched into the highly competitive C-segment, where the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf are dominant

Both the hatchback and estate versions of the i30 are expected to retain up to 55 per cent of their original list prices after one year and 20,000 miles.

Hyundai has positioned the newcomer as a serious challenger to its European rivals, using relatively high starting prices to raise the brand from a budget option to a mainstream player. High specification levels, which include air conditioning and alloy wheels as standard, have enhanced its appeal, and will benefit the vehicle on the used car market.

The i30 also incorporates modern design cues, with levels of build quality not seen before in Hyundai models of this size.

Although not as visually striking as the Fiat Bravo or as dynamic as an Astra Sport Hatch, the i30 should be a solid performer in the Toyota Auris mould. Finally a Korean brand has built a car that has the core competencies to compete in this crowded market.

After three years and 60,000 miles, the i30 hatchback and estate are predicted to retain around 33 per cent of their new cost.
