A petrol price war on the supermarket forecourts has brought relief to millions of motorists

Morrisons and Asda announced they were slashing up to 4p off a litre of fuel. Morrisons cut petrol from an average of 117.92p to 113.93p a litre. At Asda, the price fell from 116.9p to 113.9p.

Between them, Morrisons and Asda run more than 350 forecourts throughout the country.

Tesco and Sainsbury also joined the fray by offering cuts of up to 5p a litre to customers who spent £50 in their stores for a limited period.

Other fuel retailers were urged to follow their lead by campaigners who say the average price of a barrel of oil has fallen back from record highs of $147 a barrel to about $130.

Ray Holloway, the director of the Petrol Retailers Association, said: “We are seeing an end of the summer surge and that is being reflected in a drop in prices.”
