Police officers given targets for number of drivers fined

Cambridgeshire traffic police officers have been given targets for the number of fines they had out, it has been revealed.

The force has confirmed that it uses a ‘credit scheme’ in an effort to catch more drivers speeding, using mobile phones while driving or driving without insurance.

Officers who do not reach ‘basic’ standards are sent back to the classroom for further training and advice on roads policing. Similarly, those handing out too many penalties are ‘discouraged’ by the force.

Police officers are also awarded more credits if they catch drivers breaking traffic laws on especially dangerous roads and crash blackspots.

The scheme could be helping cut the death toll on the county’s roads as in the first six months of this year 31 people were killed, while in the whole of last year 86 died.
