Drivers face big rise in parking costs

Motorists should face higher charges to park in town centres to force them to walk more and reduce traffic congestion, a minister has said.

John Healey, the local government minister, said councils should make more use of their charging powers to discourage people from driving into built-up areas and encourage them to visit their local shops.

His suggestion would result in higher parking charges in council-run car parks across the country.

However, councils are already benefiting from a big increase in the amount they already make from parking charges. The figure has risen by 14% in the past three years to reach £635 million in 2006/07.
